Dills Atlantic Giant Pumpkin 15 Seeds HUGE

April 29, 2009 by Flower Vegetable Gardens · Leave a Comment

Dills Atlantic Giant Pumpkin 15 Seeds HUGE

Congratulations to Joe Jutras of Rhode Island on a New Historic World Record at 1689 lbs. Also, big kudos to Don Young of Iowa for growing the second heaviest pumpkin in 2007 at 1662 lbs. and Dan & Jason McKie of New York at 1631.5 lbs.

The grand-daddy of all giant pumpkins. The present day record for this amazing variety is now over 1600 lbs. and produces 400-500 pound fruit consistently with proper growing procedures. The only one to grow for giant pumpkin contests and international competitions. Perfect for huge jack o’lanterns and fall displays. Fruit color vary from yellow to orange. Top quality hand selected seed(non-treated). Fruit is round to flattened round, ribbed, with striking bright orange color. Seed cavity is small. Flesh is meaty, makes great pies!

User Ratings and Reviews

4 Stars Mine weren’t giant
I don’t think our pumpkins turned out according to the claim of a Giant Pumpkin, but it may not have been the fault of seeds, I think we didn’t provide them enough soil. Very quick delivery and worth a try!

4 Stars Pumpkins Seeds Purchased and Planted - we’ll see in 2008
I purchased these 15 Dills Atlantic Giant Seeds for my 3 yr. old nephew to plant along with his giant sunflowers. We live in OK - growing region 6. 15 seeds arrived promptly and were planted in the correct sign or phase of the moon according to The Farmers Almanac. I’m expecting 15 pumpkin vines to produce at least 15 pumpkins. Hirt’s will hear from me if I’m not satisfied.

I gave them 4 stars for prompt delivery and careful packaging. Hirt’s has a fairly negative customer review at one particular garden website - http://davesgarden.com/products/gwd/c/554/ but those comments tend to be ebay purchases.

I’ll reserve my opinion for “proof is in the pumpkin” till this fall. Hopefully I can report about large orange pumpkins with a 3 year old atop one.

4 Stars Giant Pumpkin Self-Contest
The Hirt’s seeds came really fast - in 4 days - and they were in a bubble-wrap envelope so no broken seeds. This matters since it’s a small quantity. Germination rate is unknown. Another star if it’s high. We are hoping only for a big pumpkins, so we’re not going to great lengths to get a prize-winner. Who counts out 15 seeds, I wonder? One guy we talked to said the Atlantic Giant pumpkin can grow 25 lbs per day! OMG!

The Best Plants for Midwest Gardens Flowers Vegetables Shrubs and Trees for Spectacular Low Maintenance Gardens Season After Season

From ground covers to shade trees, top choices for great home gardens in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars A book for the midwest home owner.
This is a book for creating a good looking yard that does not take all of your time working on it, so you spend more time looking at & enjoying the results.
Provides you the information required, to decide if a plant will grow successfully in the habitat you are trying to establish. Gives you the need to know requirements of the plant and what will make it happy and flourish.
I live in Iowa and this book is about plants that we can grow Iowa. The TV shows and many other books are always showing Zone seven plant material. That is called an annual in Iowa.
Great book for anyone planting in the midwest region. The price makes it a true value for the home owner. This is not a “coffee table” book this is an owner’s manual.

1 Star I didn’t like it.
No color pictures, it has black/white “drawn” pictures, but the information about each plant has a lot of detail.

4 Stars Very detailed and informative-no pictures
I have found this book indispensable since moving from the west coast to Iowa. My only criticism is that there are no pictures, just sketches, which makes it difficult to put together what you have read with what you have seen. I recently bought a small hand size plant encyclopedia to accompany it and I find it makes things much easier. It is a good read and works well for quick reference, too.

5 Stars Getting ready for spring!
I loved the Duggan book and now use it to plan for spring plantings. I turned an ugly yard into a beautiful garden and haven for my family and friends using the helpful, down-to-earth advice contained in the book. Whenever I think about gardening, I always check Laara’s book first to find her advice about planting in shade,or in full sun, for color choices or for hardiness. I take her book with me everywhere in a plastic bag so thatI have it while on plant shopping trips, out to the nursery and out to the garden. I bought copies for my friends, too.

5 Stars Outstanding.
A great book. It tought me how to grow great vegetables with minimal fuss, while making a great looking garden.

Hydrofarm CK64050 Germination Station with Heat Mat

April 28, 2009 by Flower Vegetable Gardens · Leave a Comment

Hydrofarm CK64050 Germination Station with Heat Mat

Includes waterproof heat mat, 3 tall humidity dome, 11 x 22 watertight base tray and 72-cell seedling insert. Give seedlings a warm, moist environment for a strong start. The germination station offers increased growing success by providing gentle warm

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars All I needed to start my plants off!
For years I have wanted to save money and start plants from seed.

I couldn’t figure out what I was doing wrong! Turns out the heat

mat is what I needed. Now I have vigorous young seedlings ready

to go outside, and I guess I saved over $200 over buying annuals

from the nursery!

4 Stars Heat mat is great!
My tomato and eggplant seeds germinated in under a week - days earlier than anticipated. I wish the plastic dome was taller to allow them to grow higher in the “mini greenhouse” atmosphere, but overall I think it’s a good product and if you are using rock wool and all that it’s probably perfect. I used “peat alternative” pellets and monitored moisture carefully - so far so good. An integrated thermostat would be nice, but for the price I am satisfied.

4 Stars quick germination!
While I’ve started seeds indoors before, this was my first year with something like the germination station, and I must say so far I’m impressed. Within three days, my sunflower seeds were starting, and within 5-7 days multiple varieties of tomatoes were poking their heads out.

2 Stars Too pricey for what you get
This item is essentially a plastic base and clear top (very flimsy) with a heating pad that the base sits on. It’s adequate for starting plants from seed, but my main complaint is that for what you get, it’s way too expensive. I believe a fair price for this item would be around $20, NOT $40. If you do decide to purchase a germination station like this one, buy the one with the taller top - it doesn’t take long before the new plants start running into the 2″ tall lid.

5 Stars Hydrofarm CK64050 Germination Station with Heat Mat
I bought this kit because of the price was about $40 and there was no shipping charge. Now I am just using the heat mat and tray to coax fig cuttings to root. Late winter I will reinsert the planting cell tray and the clear lid to germinate other small cuttings and garden vegetables. The station and mat are standard size and weight. The mat provides good even heat and seems tough enough to last a long time.

Rosalind Creasys Recipes from the Garden 200 Exciting Recipes from the Author of the Complete Book of Edible Landscaping

Rosalind Creasys Recipes from the Garden 200 Exciting Recipes from the Author of the Complete Book of Edible Landscaping

Landscape designer Creasy’s cornucopia of recipes using ingredients plucked fresh from a garden should appeal to the growing number of people interested in eating locally. After all, nothing is more local than a garden in one’s own backyard, though unfortunately, unlike the books in her Edible Garden series, she provides little guidance on getting started with gardening after recounting her own impressive endeavors. Still, even cooks who lack time or a green thumb can enjoy most of the recipes if they have access to a good farmers’ market or organic vegetable supermarket section. Her creamy succotash may not taste quite as fresh without corn that has been picked after the water has already been put on to boil, and the stuffed zucchini blossoms might not look quite as elegant with ingredients bought elsewhere and toted home, but apart from the extravagant flower petal-filled salads most of her ingredients are widely available. With many of the recipes contributed by Creasy’s friends and chefs she has met, the book has a very personal feel that is augmented by her enthusiastic descriptions and detailed instructions. Gardman Rainbow Garden R687 4 Tier Mini Greenhouse

April 26, 2009 by Flower Vegetable Gardens · Leave a Comment

Gardman Rainbow Garden R687 4 Tier Mini Greenhouse

4 wire grid shelves for air circulation. Zippered plastic pull up door for easy access. 63″ H. x 27″ W. x 19″ D.

User Ratings and Reviews

4 Stars Minor Assembly Required
Greenhouse Four-Tier Mini / B000NCTGQE

I bought this greenhouse to start seedlings in the house before transplanting them outside for spring, and also to host a little herb garden in the kitchen area.

Firstly, the measurements listed here are accurate. This is a very large unit, of respectable quality, and very affordable. I have yet to find another unit this size and quality online or in catalogues that doesn’t cost twice this much. In fact, this same greenhouse is selling in some places for double this price, plus shipping, so Amazon has quite the bargain here.

Secondly, the greenhouse is incredibly easy to put together. We had it out of the box and set up in less than half an hour, with no onerous tools required. The shelves are a thin metal lattice, to let sunlight filter down to the bottom levels, but the metal is strong and feels very sturdy. The cover has enough lee-way to slip on and off easily, as well as ties to hold it in place, and extends well to the ground, to act as a barrier to curious house cats and naughty puppies.

However, and here’s where I docked a star, some extra assembly is really erquired here. The shelves don’t attach into place - they lay on top of the shelving bars, and it is absurdly easy to unbalance a shelf such that the shelf tips over and drops all your plants on the ground, spilling dirt and seeds everywhere. I had this happen and was not too amused. Don’t let this put you off your purchase, though, as there is a simple solution: Buy some cheap cable ties (there are some on Amazon, even!) and use them to cinch the shelves in place. I used 6 ties per shelf (one in each corner and two in the middle) and the shelves are now completely sturdy and will never shift or move on me. And the cable ties are easy to cut, if you ever need to disassemble your greenhouse during a move.

So, bottom line, definitely buy this greenhouse for the bargain that it is and enjoy it immensely, as I am mine, but do remember to buy the cable ties (or something similar) to ensure that your pots won’t fall and break.

4 Stars Pretty good for the price.
This greenouse goes together in about 10 minutes with no tools as the descriptions says. It’s not the sturdiest frame but it should support small plants like those pictured. I added my own wire ties between the shelves and frame to stiffen it up a bit. I don’t know what the “fleece cover” business was about in the description because it comes with a clear plastic cover with a zippered door which should last several years. I will need to anchor it some way to keep it from blowing over in the wind.

1940s Garden and Home Gardening Films DVD Classic Horticulture and Plant Growth Videos w Flower Vegetable Herbs Soil and Seed Tips

Take a look at the most memorable classic gardening movies of the 1940s collected on one DVD. These films are a great mixture of education and entertainment, and offer an old look at an ageless hobby that never goes out of fashion. You can’t find this collection anywhere else, so don’t miss out! Running time 56 minutes. TABLE OF CONTENTS:

Victory Gardens (1944) - 20 minutes running time

- A charming film in which an American family decides to grow its own food during WWII.

Gardening (1940) - 11 minutes running time

- An Encyclopedia Brittanica film that shows the process of developing a garden, from selecting the seeds to harvesting.

Garden Wise (1940’s) - 25 minutes running time

- This film has terrific time-lapse photography of flowers blooming throughout. Ironically, this movie was produced by a business (Monsato Company) that produced harmful chemicals for use in gardens.

Hmong Red Cucumber 10 Seeds

April 24, 2009 by Flower Vegetable Gardens · Leave a Comment

Hmong Red Cucumber 10 Seeds

Hmong Red The fruits are white to pale green, turning orange-red as they ripen. A very productive and tasty variety that stays mild even when large. This heirloom was collected from a Hmong (Meo) immigrant. Millions of the Hmong tribe live on the borders of Thailand, China, Burma, Laos and Vietnam and are a very ancient people.

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars So rewarding
Do not be scared off by people who complain about germination. Germination is tricky and can easily be ruined by the grower. I am a beginning gardener (2 years). I have purchased many seeds from this provider, including the red cucumbers, purple broccoli, artichokes, baby corn, red carrots, broccoflower, and especially anything unusual. Every single thing I purchased worked and germinated.(I am not saying every seed germinated, but plenty enough did.) I am not surprised that maybe the seed might not be as hardy as common seeds, but Hirts specializes in unusual seeds (that have not been around for centuries), so maybe they are not as hardy. But they do germinate - even for a know-nothing like me.

The best thing is -OH MY GOODNESS - HOW DELICIOUS - HOW REWARDING - to go and pick vegetables for dinner in your garden. The flavor of home-grown, without pesticides, etc. is out of this world!

Do not let others deter you from this wonderful adventure.

1 Star be careful
Just warning everybody to please read the responses to some of the reviews here. I was considering buying these seeds because I liked the interesting color before reading the reviews. Now there’s no way I’ll order from this company!

5 Stars 10 out of 10 germinated
Very fresh seeds..I soaked them in a 100ppm solution of gibberellic acid for around 3 hours, and used the gremination station sold on Amazon. It has a heated pad to aid in gremination. The seeds litterly came up over night after the soak.24 hours to be exact. All healthy, thick stems…very pleased

1 Star Lousy Germination
My children and I ordered a selection of really fun seeds from you. (Hmong Red Cucumber

Black Sea Man Tomato, Rare Tigger Melon, Mexican Miniature Watermelon, Toga Striped Eggplant, Purple Cauliflower, Unwins Exhibiton 7 Pound Onion, Rare Red Bull Brussels Sprout)

My germination rate has been about 25% or less. All my other seeds from other companies are doing wonderful on my tables, but my Hirt’s seeds are in a category of their own, small, stunted, wimpy, or not at all. I will not be ordering from you again, and I’m sorry I wasted my money.

5 Stars Heirloom Hmong Red is Golden Orange
The photographic depiction is a bit misleading as the fruits are white to pale green, turning golden-orange as they ripen. A very productive and pleasantly flavored cultivar that stays mild even when large. The fruit seems to appear out of nowhere from spaces that seemed empty the previous day; providing a continuous source of enjoyment and garden amazement.

The heirloom seed I purchased (not from this vendor) was collected from a Hmong (Meo) immigrant and is also available from large, widely respected seed vendors. Millions of the Hmong tribe live on the borders of Thailand, China, Burma, Laos and Vietnam and are a very ancient people.

This cultivar is a garden novelty for those fortunate to have the space required for a large selection of heirloom vegetables. It would not be my first selection, or recommendation for those limited by their space to only one Cucumis sativus.
